Russell Cook’s Africa Marathon Run Blocked by Visa Issues

British runner Russell Cook’s epic 360-marathon challenge across Africa faces unforeseen hurdles, including visa denials, health risks, and geo-political tension.

Russell Cook, a runner from West Sussex, England, set out to complete 360 marathons in 240 days across Africa to raise funds for The Running Charity. What began as an audacious sporting feat has become an international challenge embroiled in visa denials, health concerns, and political instability.

A gruelling route and a race against time

Cook began his journey on 22 April at the southern tip of South Africa and has already logged almost 12,000 km through 13 countries. Yet, after 278 days on the road, a major obstacle has emerged: difficulty securing entry visas, notably at the Algeria–Mauritania border.

  • Originally: 9,320 miles and 16 frontiers

  • Revised: Distance extended due to visa rejections, health setbacks, geo-political friction, and an incident in Angola

Algerian embassy grant reprieve, aided by UK MPs

Just days ago, Cook announced he had secured a multi-entry Algerian visa permitting passage through the Tindouf province. With more than 4,000 km still to run, his Project Africa timeline is now being finalised.

The breakthrough follows advocacy by two UK Conservative MPs, Tim Loughton and Alexander Stafford, who contacted the Foreign Office, the Algerian ambassador and the embassy to challenge the visa impasse.

Beyond bureaucracy, Cook continues to confront serious health and security risks in regions with extreme conditions. While in Angola, he endured a violent assault that underscored the dangers he faces.

Undeterred, Cook’s supporters—family, sponsors and donors—have rallied to his cause, raising nearly £143,000 for The Running Charity.

His determination in the face of administrative roadblocks, life-threatening climates and personal danger stands as an inspiring call to action for anyone seeking to make a difference.

In the face of visa denials and health scares, his journey proves that with grit and support, no goal is out of reach.
