Sri Lanka may extend visa exemption for Indian tourists

The Sri Lankan government is considering extending visa-free entry for Indian tourists beyond March 2024 to boost tourism and simplify travel. Learn about the potential changes to the current eTA system.

Indian travelers have good reason to celebrate: the Sri Lankan government is considering extending the visa-exemption period for Indian nationals beyond March 2024. The move aims to position Sri Lanka as an easily accessible destination for neighboring Indian tourists.

Current visa-exemption system in brief

Since November 2023, Sri Lanka has offered free visas to passport holders from seven nations: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan. The current pilot program runs until 31 March 2024 and grants free entry for the first 30 days of a visit. Eligible travelers must secure an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), but the simplified application remains free until 31 March 2024.

Extending visa exemption for Indian tourists

To support its recovering tourism sector, the Sri Lankan government is weighing an extension of visa-free entry specifically for Indian visitors beyond March 2024. The decision could prove crucial to the country’s economic rebound, as India is Sri Lanka’s top source market for inbound tourism.

The Sri Lankan Minister of Tourism and Lands, Harin Fernando, said at the OTM 2024 event that cabinet colleagues are exploring a longer visa-free stay for Indian tourists. The goal is to do away with cumbersome visa procedures that may deter travelers who favor spontaneous short trips.

For Sri Lankan authorities, making the island an easier sell to Indian holidaymakers is key to reviving the tourism economy and strengthening bilateral ties. A sustained rise in Indian arrivals could boost local incomes in hotels, restaurants and tour operations, spurring job creation across the sector.

Indian visitors would also benefit, gaining simpler and cheaper access to Sri Lanka, enabling them to craft more flexible itineraries and enjoy the island’s famed culture, landscapes and heritage sites to the full.

Watch this space: the final cabinet decision is pending, but it could open the door to richer travel between Sri Lanka and India.
