Rwanda Waives Visa Fees for Africans in Tourism Push

Rwanda eliminates visa fees for African travelers, joining Seychelles, Benin, and Gambia in a continental push for seamless intra-African movement. President Kagame highlights tourism as a key economic driver amid WTTC Kigali summit.

In a landmark announcement today, Rwandan President Paul Kagame declared that all Africans can now travel to Rwanda without paying a visa fee. The move is part of the continent’s broader effort to enhance free movement of people and trade.

Initiative to boost intra-African tourism

Speaking at the 23rd WTTC Global Summit in Kigali, President Kagame underscored the urgent need to grow tourism in Africa. By collaborating with organizations such as the WTTC, he aims to position Africa as a top global travel destination.

The Rwandan leader emphasized that tourism is a vital engine of economic growth for his country—and a means to heal historical wounds, nearly 30 years after the genocide that devastated the nation. He expressed confidence in Africa’s potential as a unified tourism destination and invited visitors from across the continent and beyond to experience its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes.

⚠️ Note: While the announcement suggests all Africans can travel to Rwanda without visa fees, travelers may still be required to obtain a visa—albeit one issued free of administrative fees.

Rwanda joins top African nations in easing intra-African travel

With the removal of visa fees for African visitors, Rwanda becomes the fourth African nation to allow visa-free or fee-free entry for Africans—after Seychelles, Benin, and Gambia. This aligns with broader continental efforts to improve free movement of people and trade, much like Europe’s Schengen Zone.

Kenyan President William Ruto recently announced that visa restrictions for African travelers visiting Kenya will be lifted by the end of the year—another step toward fostering cross-border exchanges and economic development.

According to UNECA data, nearly 60% of tourists in Africa still come from outside the continent.

President Kagame championed Africa’s potential as a unified tourism destination, where a growing middle class could redefine global tourism’s future.
