Sierra Leone Launches e-Visa System for Travelers in 2023

Sierra Leone introduces its e-Visa system on March 9, 2023, allowing tourists to apply online, replacing embassy visits and visa-on-arrival requirements with secure, efficient digital processing.

On March 9, 2023, travelers intending to visit Sierra Leone can now apply for an e-Visa online. This new visa application system was developed after years of preparation by the Sierra Leonean government, significantly streamlining entry formalities for the country.

Previously, tourists were required to visit the nearest Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission or obtain their visa upon arrival. With the introduction of the e-Visa, travelers can now submit their visa applications in a matter of clicks via the government website www.evisa.sl.

The e-Visa program offers various visa types to suit travel needs, including tourist, business, study, and visiting visas. To apply, travelers must provide personal details such as name, gender, date of birth, passport number, issuing country, nationality, profession, travel purpose, and the name and address of their host in Sierra Leone.

The single-entry e-Visa is valid for 90 days from issuance and allows for a stay of up to 30 days in Sierra Leone. In contrast, the multiple-entry e-Visa, also valid for one year from issuance, permits multiple 30-day stays within that period. It's important to note that e-Visas are not extendable once in the country.

e-Visa fees are based on the traveler’s nationality. For tourists and business travelers, the cost is 80 USD (€69.34) for a single-entry e-Visa and 160 USD (€138.68) for a multiple-entry e-Visa.

Citizens of African Union member countries receive a discounted rate or are exempt from visa requirements and are therefore not required to obtain this document. These countries include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo.

Travelers can pay e-Visa fees online using Visa, Mastercard, or American Express credit cards. However, Sierra Leonean authorities recommend applying well in advance of travel, as processing can take several weeks or longer in some cases.
