Thailand’s New Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): What You Need to Know

Thailand is introducing a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) from December 2024, requiring advance applications for visa-exempt visitors. Discover who needs it, how to apply, and its benefits for faster, more secure border crossings.

Thailand, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and legendary hospitality, has launched an ambitious initiative to modernize and strengthen controls for visa-exempt travelers entering the Kingdom. Since July 2024, new entry rules took effect, reshaping tourism and business travel procedures across the country. Designed to enhance security, streamline visitor flows, and ensure compliance with local regulations, these reforms are essential for all travelers—whether you're a tourist eager to explore Thailand’s wonders or a business traveler on official duties. Ahead of your trip, understanding the upcoming changes will help you avoid any arrival-day surprises. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your visit to Thailand.

Introducing Thailand’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

In line with global trends set by nations such as the United States, Canada, and South Korea, Thailand is implementing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This system strengthens oversight of tourists currently exempt from visa requirements.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with multiple government agencies to roll out this new process. According to official sources, the ETA will play a key role in monitoring the movement of foreign nationals crossing Thailand’s borders.

Why Now?

Announced in May, the initiative reflects a global shift toward stricter border controls and more efficient traveler management. Thailand’s move parallels similar plans in the United Kingdom and Israel, both of which are set to launch their own ETA systems in 2025. These coordinated efforts underscore a worldwide trend toward heightened vigilance in border security.

Implementation Timeline

To help travelers prepare, here’s a provisional schedule for Thailand’s ETA rollout:

  • December 2024: Launch of an initial pilot phase

  • June 2025: Full implementation nationwide, requiring all visa-exempt travelers to secure ETA approval prior to entry

Once fully activated, the ETA will be mandatory for arrivals by air, sea, or land.

How to Obtain Your ETA

Applications will be processed through Thailand’s official electronic visa portal. Each trip requires a separate ETA request. As of latest updates, the ETA will be issued free of charge and come with a redeemable QR code for automated entry and exit at immigration kiosks.

Exemptions apply to certain passport holders—including diplomatic, official, and border pass—who will not be required to obtain an ETA.

Who Needs the ETA?

Currently, citizens of 93 visa-exempt countries may enter Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. This includes passport holders from countries such as:

  • France

  • United States

  • Germany

  • Australia

  • Canada

  • Japan

  • South Korea

Note: Until the full ETA system goes live in June 2025, these travelers remain visa-exempt and do not yet need to apply.

Benefits of the Thai ETA

The primary advantage of the ETA is its promise of faster, more efficient entry. Automated immigration kiosks will reduce wait times and streamline processing, easing congestion at airports and border crossings. This modernized system isn’t just about speed—it also enhances national security by improving tracking of foreign arrivals, helping deter illegal activities at the border.

The process delivers a dual benefit: it simplifies travel for visitors while reinforcing oversight, creating a safer, more orderly entry environment for everyone.

Practical Tips for Travelers

If you’re planning a trip after December 2024, prepare to apply for your ETA in advance. To ensure a smooth journey:

  • Check your eligibility as soon as the system opens

  • Gather the required documentation before starting your online application

  • Once approved, keep a digital copy of your QR code on hand—paper backup recommended for maximum convenience

Follow these steps to secure admission and take full advantage of the automated entry lanes at Thai checkpoints.
