Traveling to Brazil: Visa Exemption for Chinese Citizens
Chinese travelers can now visit Brazil visa-free until December 31, 2026. Discover eligibility criteria, required documents, and diplomatic context behind this exemption.
In April 2025, Brazil started a phased rollout of its e-Visa system, expanding visa eligibility to multiple nationalities. A major update now simplifies entry for one key group: Chinese citizens. If you hold a Chinese passport and plan to visit Brazil this year, there’s great news. As of May 11, 2026, Brazil’s government has officially waived visa requirements for Chinese nationals following a bilateral agreement between the two countries.
This decision was announced through a press release published on May 11, 2026, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism.

Eligibility Criteria for Brazilian Visa Exemption
While this policy change removes visa requirements and enhances travel ease, it comes with strict conditions. To qualify for the waiver, travelers must meet the following requirements:
Passport condition: Applies only to holders of a valid standard passport.
Permitted purposes: Tourism, leisure, business trips (meetings, prospecting, contract signing), airport transit, or participation in non-paid artistic or sports activities organized within Brazil.
Maximum stay: Up to 30 days in Brazil.
Validity period: This exemption is temporary and ends on December 31, 2026.
Diplomatic Context: A Strategic Reciprocity
This move by Brasília is not standalone. It reflects a broader deepening of bilateral ties between the two nations. To understand the full picture, consider the previous year: in mid-2025, China took the lead by introducing a 30-day visa waiver for Brazilian visitors. By implementing the same policy on May 11, 2026, Brazil maintains diplomatic parity—boosting tourism and trade flows between both countries until year-end.
What You Need Before Crossing the Border
Important note: “Visa-free” does not mean “inspection-free.” While entry formalities are streamlined, travelers are still screened by immigration officers upon arrival (at airports such as São Paulo-Guarulhos or Rio de Janeiro-Galeão). To ensure smooth entry, you must carry the following documents when clearing Brazilian immigration:
Valid passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date, with at least two blank pages.
Onward/return ticket: Confirmed proof of departure from Brazil within 30 days.
Proof of accommodation: Hotel reservation or certified invitation letter from a Brazilian host.
Financial evidence: Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (bank statements, international credit cards).
Although not mandatory for general entry (except when coming from high-risk zones), a yellow fever vaccination certificate is strongly advised if visiting the Amazon, Pantanal, or other forested regions. Additionally, consider travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation.
