US Diversity Visa Program: How It Works & How to Apply for the Green Card Lottery

The US Diversity Visa Program offers up to 55,000 green cards annually via a lottery system—discover eligibility rules, deadlines, and application steps to boost your chances.

Dreaming of the so-called "American Dream"? The US Diversity Visa Program, popularly known as the "Green Card Lottery", may be your golden ticket to living in America. Administered by the US Department of State, the program awards up to 55,000 immigrant visas each year to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S.

How Does It Work?

The program operates on a random drawing basis—a lottery, not a game of chance. Eligibility is not based solely on luck; strict criteria must be met to qualify for selection.

Who Can Apply?

Your country of birth is a critical factor. If you were born in a country that sends many immigrants to the U.S.—such as Canada, China, India, Mexico, or the United Kingdom—you are not eligible to enter the Diversity Visa Program. These countries are automatically disqualified.

But don’t lose hope! If your spouse was born in an eligible country, you can use their nationality to enter the lottery. Smart, isn’t it?

Mandatory Requirements

A minimum of a high school education or equivalent is required. Alternatively, you must have at least two years of work experience in an occupation that typically requires at least two years of training. The U.S. Department of Labor maintains a detailed list of qualifying occupations—be sure to check before applying.

When and How to Apply

Mark your calendar: October 2 to November 5, 2024, until noon Eastern Time. This is the application window for the DV-2026 program. Don’t wait until the last minute—the official website may become overwhelmed with traffic.

Apply online exclusively through dvprogram.state.gov. Complete the application form, upload a recent photo that meets strict U.S. visa photo requirements, and cross your fingers.

Lottery Results Day

Check your status starting May 4, 2025. Save your confirmation number—it's your key to accessing the results.

If You’re Selected

Being chosen is only the first hurdle. You must still attend an interview, complete medical exams, and demonstrate sufficient funds to support your move to the U.S.

Beware of scams!

The U.S. Department of State will never contact you by email or phone to notify you of your selection or ask for money to "guarantee" your visa. The only official site is dvprogram.state.gov—no exceptions.
