Background: Why the change to 2026?
Recently, travelers using Middle Eastern transit hubs have faced major flight disruptions (itinerary adjustments by major airlines such as Emirates, Etihad or Qatar Airways). These unforeseen logistical events resulted in a decline of around 21 % in tourist arrivals to the Maldives. To adapt to this global situation, and to support tourists already in the country who would be unable to leave in time, the Maldivian authorities decided to relax and digitize the entire visa extension.
The new 48-hour extension procedure: how does it work?
Until now, extending your visa via the immigration portal could prove tedious, requiring numerous supporting documents. To access an extension request, go to the visa service.
Since April 2026, the process has been optimized for maximum speed.
Here are the 3 stages in the new approach :

- Simplified payment Pay extension fees directly via immigration's secure payment platform.
- Express approval You receive your official approval in 48 hours maximum.
Even if the guaranteed delay is 48 hours, we always recommend that our travelers (especially those whose return flights may include several stopovers) start this process at least 4 to 5 days before the initial visa expires, to avoid any last-minute stress.
30-day visa on arrival
The Maldives remains one of the most accessible destinations. The vast majority of international travelers benefit from a free 30-day tourist visa issued on arrival, The Maldivian customs authorities do not require any formalities prior to departure from their country of origin. However, Maldivian customs are very strict about entry conditions. Make sure you have a complete file :
