Zimbabwe Upgrades e-Visa Application System to Ease Travel

Zimbabwe’s new online visa and permit platform streamlines immigration, adds e-visa and e-permit services, and enables end-to-end digital processing—cutting queues, cost and delays for visitors and investors.

The Zimbabwean government has launched a new online visa application platform that allows travelers from visa-required countries to complete all immigration formalities over the internet, replacing the former paper-based system.

Expanded border management service

This initiative is the latest expansion of the Online Border Management System (OBMS), first introduced the previous year. The upgraded platform now supports a broader range of immigration services, including electronic visas (e-visas), digital residence and work permits (e‑permits), and other essential procedures.

The old system only handled visa applications, and travelers could not pay online; payments were made at a border post upon arrival. Today, applicants may submit their visa request and settle the visa fee entirely online ahead of travel.

“We have created a visa-application and payment system that lets visitors apply and pay in advance, cutting arrival delays.”

Clémence Masango, Principal Director of Immigration

Fully digitalized application journey

Through the official government portal, travelers can:

  • Complete online visa application forms

  • Upload supporting documents

  • Pay visa fees securely online

  • Receive decisions electronically

All steps can be performed from home—no embassy visit, no postal dispatch—dramatically shortening processing times.

Digital residence and work authorization

Beside short-stay visas, the portal now also accommodates electronic residence and work permits. Modules for temporary residence and investor permits are already live, with additional permit types in development.

Tourism and economy boost

“This system is designed to encourage tourism and investment,” explains Respect Gono, Head of Immigration. By lowering administrative burden and costs, authorities aim to draw more international visitors—crucial for national growth.

Stronger security, smoother experience

The platform embeds digital and biometric checks to beef up border security, counter fraud, and enable real-time tracking of visa and permit holders. User-centered design delivers step-by-step guidance, automatic notifications, and global accessibility via any internet-connected device.

Six reasons to visit Zimbabwe

If you want to be a true traveler visiting pristine natural and historical wonders, enjoy awe-inspiring landscapes such as Victoria Falls and Lake Kariba, encounter abundant wildlife in Hwange National Park, and uncover legacies of medieval Africa like Matobo Hills and Great Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe is the perfect destination.

Here are six reasons you may consider traveling to Zimbabwe:

  • Experience a country largely untouched by mass tourism

  • Marvel at the world’s largest waterfall

  • Discover a major medieval African historical site

  • Enjoy warm, authentic hospitality

  • Soak up diverse landscapes: plains, savanna and lakes

  • Take a photo safari with rare white rhinos

Future-ready administration

This reform reflects Zimbabwe’s drive to modernize public services and align with global best practices in border management. It adds the country to the roster of African nations using technology to facilitate international mobility and boost attractiveness.

In short, Zimbabwe now offers a single, secure and efficient gateway for all visa and permit applications, giving travelers, investors and expatriates a simplified, modern experience. The new portal also advances the government’s slogan “Zimbabwe is open for business.”
