China Expands Visa-Free Transit Policy to 55 Countries for 10 Days
China extends visa-free transit to 55 countries, allowing travelers to visit for up to 10 days while in transit to a third destination.
In an effort to reboot international tourism and economic exchanges, China has expanded its 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy to nationals of 55 countries, according to a Xinhua state news agency statement. The measure took effect on June 12, 2025.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revive China’s tourism appeal and strengthen foreign trade ties after restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
How it works: eligibility and entry requirements
Travelers from 55 eligible countries may now enter China without a visa for up to 10 days, provided they are transiting to a third country. During their stay, they may visit or conduct business, subject to the following conditions:
1. The traveler must hold citizenship in one of the 55 eligible program countries.

2. Present a valid international travel document valid for at least three months and meet entry requirements for the destination country or region.
3. Hold confirmed interline passenger tickets showing a specified date and seat for a third country or region within 240 hours, complete an Arrival Card for Foreigners, and cooperate with border authorities at entry and exit.
4. If all conditions are met, visitors can make their request at any of 60 designated ports of entry, including Beijing and Shanghai.
