China Makes Hainan Visa-Free Extended Stay Up to 30 Days

Travel to China’s Hainan Island is now possible without a visa for tourism, business, family visits, medical care, exhibitions or sports events. Discover who qualifies and how long you can stay.

China’s Hainan province has significantly expanded its visa-free travel options, covering purposes beyond tourism. Visitors coming for business, family visits, medical treatment, exhibitions, or sports events can now enter the region without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.

Those planning long-term work or study in Hainan will still require an appropriate visa. This announcement follows recent easing of entry rules for travelers from multiple countries, including France.

Beijing’s goal is to further develop Hainan as a key "free port" with distinctive Chinese characteristics.

Tourism Drives Hainan’s Economy

Hainan’s island economy is growing, powered by tourism that draws millions annually. The province welcomed over 90 million visitors in 2023 as part of a broader plan to establish the world’s largest free port with a fully independent customs system by the end of the year.

Policy Reform Supports Local Development

As part of this strategic push, Hainan is actively courting foreign investment and facilitating the establishment of international firms. This has triggered a surge in both tourists and investors. The government’s corresponding pledge is to deepening reform, expanding openness, and turning the island into a high-standard free trade port.

The National Immigration Administration (NIA) reports ongoing enhancements to entry and exit procedures, including streamlined immigration formalities, and promises continued innovation in immigration policies so that they align with the country’s progression toward higher-level openness.

With the new visa exemption now in place, Hainan stands ready to welcome more visitors to the tropical south of China. The island is celebrated for its pristine beaches, warm climate, and unique wildlife, making it the perfect destination for relaxation or efficient business travel.
