Do French Travelers Need a Passport to Visit the UK?

French travelers must now present a valid passport—no ID cards—to enter the UK post-Brexit, but tourist stays remain visa-free for up to six months.

The United Kingdom remains a top destination for French travelers, drawn by its historic cities, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant culture. Before booking your trip, however, it’s important to confirm whether you need a passport to enter the country.

Yes—French travelers, including citizens of France, must present a valid passport to enter the United Kingdom. Since Brexit, European Union passports are no longer accepted as travel documents. National ID cards are no longer valid for entry to the UK.

Good news, though: French citizens can still visit the UK as tourists for up to six months without a visa. Upon arrival, you’ll simply need to present your passport and answer questions from immigration officers. Rare exceptions apply.

Now that you know how to enter the UK, here are a few fun insights into tourism in this fascinating country:

  • London is one of the world’s most visited cities, famous for landmarks such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace. But did you know London also hosts the world’s oldest underground station? Paddington opened in 1863 and remains in service today.

  • If you’re looking to escape the city, the UK offers stunning natural scenery. Cornwall’s dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and quaint fishing villages are iconic. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Highlands impress with majestic mountains, mysterious lochs, and medieval castles.

  • The UK boasts rich history and deep culture. History buffs can explore ancient sites like Stonehenge or tour Windsor Castle, the official residence of the British monarch. Culture lovers can attend West End shows or visit world-class museums like the British Museum or National Gallery.

  • Finally, the UK is celebrated for its varied and delicious food. Must-tries include fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding, and roast beef. London’s Michelin-starred restaurants rank among the world’s finest, while traditional pubs offer cozy, welcoming atmospheres.
