In India, some connected devices face travel bans

Satellite communication devices, including GPS trackers like Garmin inReach, are banned in India without government authorization under the 1933 Wireless Telegraphy Act.

Many countries enforce strict regulations around satellite communication devices such as the Garmin inReach. These devices enable users to send messages, trigger SOS alerts, track routes, and share location data—without relying on cellular service—but may be illegal in certain jurisdictions.

The India example

In India, satellite communication devices are prohibited without prior government authorization under the 1933 Wireless Telegraphy Act.

Recently, a Scottish hiker was arrested at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport for carrying a Garmin inReach GPS device. Similarly, a Canadian ultramarathon runner was detained in Goa for the same reason.

Indian authorities classified the device as illegal under the country’s stringent satellite communication regulations. Travelers must obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Telecommunications to bring such devices into the nation. Violations may result in detention, confiscation of the device, or legal penalties.

The Birmingham Consulate notes that a simple customs declaration on arrival may suffice in some cases.

How to travel legally with these devices

Garmin maintains an updated list of countries where such devices are regulated or banned—including Afghanistan, Sudan, Cuba, and Myanmar. Prospective travelers should always review destination-specific regulations before bringing a Garmin inReach or any satellite communication device across borders.

GNSS/GPS watches are an exception

GNSS/GPS watches such as Garmin’s Forerunner or Fenix models are generally safe to carry internationally. These devices are passive receivers that do not transmit signals; they only collect data from GNSS/GPS satellites to calculate metrics like position and pace. Because they do not emit signals, they are not subject to the same restrictions as satellite communicators.
