Kenya waives most African travelers' eTA requirement

Kenya drops electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for most African travelers—except Somalia and Libya—while streamlining eTA for others and bolstering airport security with API/PNR.

The Kenyan government has introduced a major shift in travel policy, removing the requirement for an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for the majority of African travelers.

Visitors from most African countries can now enter Kenya without needing to obtain an eTA beforehand. This exemption, however, does not apply to Somalia and Libya due to security concerns. Eligible travelers will be permitted to stay in Kenya for up to two months without an eTA (an electronic travel authorization).

Continued benefits for East African Community (EAC) citizens

Citizens of EAC member states—already exempt from eTA—will continue to enjoy preferential stay conditions. These countries include Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania. They will still be allowed to stay in Kenya for up to six months without an eTA, in line with the region’s free movement agreements.

Enhanced eTA system for other travelers

For travelers from other parts of the world, Kenya is introducing a faster eTA processing system. A fast-track approval process will be implemented, ensuring that approval is granted within 72 hours—potentially even instantly, depending on operational capacity.

The country is also adopting the API/PNR (Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record) system. This technology enhances border security by collecting and analyzing traveler data, improving overall efficiency at airports nationwide.

Kenyan authorities have instructed relevant ministries to finalize detailed guidelines within one week, aiming to enhance passenger experience across the country’s airports. However, an official implementation date for these changes has yet to be announced.

A reminder: Kenya’s eTA system

The eTA system was introduced in January 2024 to replace the traditional visa process. It was designed to simplify entry procedures while ensuring better traveler monitoring. Applications are available via the portal www.etakenya.go.ke or the mobile app “Kenya ETA”. Once approved, the eTA remains valid for three months and allows a maximum stay of 90 days with a single entry.
