Assisting Travelers with Kenya’s New ETA: Our Experience

Kenya’s new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system replaces visa entry requirements. Our experience helping travelers navigate the system highlights both its benefits and challenges.

After a period of uncertainty and delays, Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization system (ETA) is finally operational. This change introduces a widespread exemption from entry visas for all travelers heading to the East African nation. Since January 5, visitors can now apply for an ETA before departure to enter Kenya without a visa.

What is Kenya’s ETA and how does it work?

Following a presidential directive that Kenya would become a visa-exempt country starting in January 2024, a dedicated digital platform was developed to pre-screen travelers before their arrival. This online system allows Kenyan authorities to receive and process Electronic Travel Authorization requests from travelers worldwide.

  1. Travelers must complete an online form and pay the associated fee;

  2. Upon approval, they receive an ETA containing key details about their identity and intended stay;

  3. Travelers may enter Kenya with a valid ETA.

It is important to note that obtaining an ETA does not guarantee automatic entry into Kenya. Travelers must also present a valid passport upon arrival.

Our Experience Assisting Travelers with Kenya’s New ETA

Over the years, we have guided countless travelers through visa and travel preparations. The introduction of this new digital tool simplifying the visa-exempt entry process marks a significant shift for international visitors eager to explore Kenya’s stunning landscapes and cultures.

Dozen of travelers had pre-ordered Kenyan e-visas for 2024 through our services, for which we offered refunds or assistance in transitioning to the new ETA system instead.

Here’s our review of Kenya’s ETA:

  • The online platform is intuitive and easy to use;

  • Clear instructions guide applicants through each step;

  • Processing time is fast—typically about three business days;

  • The ETA includes all necessary information, presented in a user-friendly layout;

  • This streamlined system simplifies travel planning and helps avoid last-minute airport formalities.

⚠️ Watch out for these issues:

  • We encountered several technical glitches during document uploads and payments;

  • As of now, authorities do not offer a "premium" service for faster processing or dedicated support;

  • The form strongly emphasizes “arrival by air,” even though the ETA can also be requested by cruise travelers. As with our clients, submit sea transit documents as you would flight tickets.

Like any new digital system, Kenya’s ETA continues to evolve. Early feedback from the travelers we’ve supported, however, has been overwhelmingly positive, underscoring the platform’s real value in simplifying travel to Kenya.

What Information Does Kenya’s ETA Contain?

Once the ETA application is submitted and the fee is paid, Kenyan authorities issue an electronic authorization including the following: traveler photo, QR code, ETA reference number, traveler’s full name, date of birth, passport number, nationality, ETA start and end date, number of permitted entries, and authorized duration of stay.

The ETA document is also designed to fold into quarters—an innovative feature, as Kenya is among the first to offer this format.
