New China Visa Requirements From March 31, 2025
Ahead of a digital overhaul on 31 March 2025, China imposes a mandatory pre-check for French visa applicants—while the current online system undergoes three-day maintenance.
From 31 March 2025, French citizens applying for a Chinese visa must complete a new pre-screening step. The Chinese authorities are rolling out an online verification process that promises to streamline administration but could add an extra layer for first-time applicants. An official notice has been published by the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Paris.

Online Pre-Check Mandatory
From 31 March 2025 every Chinese-visa applicant in France—whether using the Paris or Marseille centre—must first complete an online form and upload all required documents before submitting a physical file. Once uploaded, applicants will wait for the centre to confirm whether the dossier can be lodged in person.
The authorities state the change will simplify paperwork, cut errors, and speed processing, particularly for work, study and long-term residency visas.
System Maintenance Window
Applicants are advised to file early. The existing online platform will close for maintenance between 15:00 on 28 March and 09:00 on 31 March. Travellers can either finalise their applications before the outage or wait until 31 March to complete the new-style form.
Who Is Affected?
The online verification is part of a broader drive to modernise China’s consular services, with the goal of shortening wait times for applicants. For travellers who are less comfortable with online procedures or who face technical hurdles, the extra step may slow down the process.
The change applies only to long-stay visa applications; holders of 30-day visa-free entry (business or tourism) are unaffected. Standard procedures remain in place for Hong Kong and Macao visas; the new online check is not required for these destinations.
Ultimately, the reform is expected to make Chinese visa applications smoother and faster; yet the run-up to 31 March, together with the platform maintenance and the need to master an online workflow, may cause temporary inconvenience for some.
