Remote Work Reshapes the US Market

The US remote work revolution has permanently altered the employment landscape, with one-third of jobs now performed remotely post-pandemic and tech-heavy regions leading the shift.

The coronavirus pandemic triggered a massive shift toward remote work, fundamentally reshaping the American job market. To understand these changes, academics and researchers have gathered extensive data on remote work trends across the Atlantic.

Remote work statistics in the United States

According to a Stanford University study, experts found that remote work surged during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, when nearly two-thirds of U.S. jobs were performed remotely. Since then, it has stabilized at historically high levels. Between 2021 and 2022, approximately one-third of American jobs were conducted remotely.

Stanford’s research also showed that most remote workers have transitioned to hybrid schedules. Additionally, a Gallup Post survey revealed that 29% of remote workers were fully remote in June, down from 39% in February—while the share of hybrid workers increased by a similar margin.

Remote work’s impact on knowledge industries

The remote work wave has disrupted knowledge-based industries in particular. Within these sectors, certain job categories are more adaptable to remote arrangements. Experts identified the highest remote work adoption in these fields:

  • Technology and communications;

  • Professional services and finance;

  • Insurance.

These insights come from data gathered by more than 200,000 businesses using payroll and benefits provider Gusto. The research confirms that remote work is expanding at all organizational levels.

The remote work revolution reaches construction

Perhaps most surprising, researchers found that remote work has revolutionized the construction industry—traditionally one of the least likely sectors to adopt hybrid or remote models for back-office staff.

When the pandemic struck, construction firms abandoned cumbersome workflows and turned to streamlined cloud-based tools. Managers learned to oversee flexible schedules, helping most companies retain their workforce during the transition.

Where remote work is booming across the US

Researchers pinpointed the U.S. regions with the highest remote work adoption: Manhattan, the District of Columbia, and San Francisco. Major swaths of Northern Virginia—including Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Loudoun, and Fairfax counties—also rank high. Other notable locations include the Los Alamos National Laboratory area in New Mexico, and an affluent lakeside enclave in Forsyth County, Georgia, northeast of Atlanta.

Meanwhile, the Census Bureau estimates that remote work is driving a shift of talent toward rural areas. Between 2020 and 2021, Manhattan and San Francisco lost more than 10,000 residents each. The working-age population in those counties also fell by nearly 10% in the same period.
