Seychelles Introduces Environmental Sustainability Tax for Tourists
Seychelles rolls out a three-tier Tourism Environmental Sustainability Tax to fund conservation and protect its fragile island ecosystems.
The government of Seychelles has introduced a Tourism Environmental Sustainability Tax, which came into effect on 1 August. The groundbreaking move aims to preserve the archipelago’s unique and fragile environment while supporting its thriving tourism sector.
A Three-Tier System for Tourist Establishments
Speaking in Victoria, Vice-President Ahmed Afif unveiled the new tax as part of a fair three-tier system requiring all tourist establishments to collect contributions from visitors based on size:
Small properties (1–24 rooms): 25 SCR per person per night
Medium properties (25–50 rooms): 75 SCR per person per night
Large properties (51+ rooms): 100 SCR per person per night
A Shared Commitment to Environmental Stewardship
The new environmental levy fosters a shared sense of responsibility by involving tourists directly in Seychelles’ conservation efforts. By implementing this measure, the nation aims to set an example in combating environmental degradation and promoting more sustainable tourism. The legal framework governing the tax was published in the Official Gazette on 28 July.
Cabinet Decisions Beyond the Tourism Tax
At a cabinet meeting chaired by President Wavel Ramkalawan on 5 July, officials approved several additional measures, including Seychelles’ ratification of the revised Kyoto Convention, which streamlines and harmonises customs procedures to facilitate international trade while ensuring effective border controls.
The government was also briefed on the forthcoming introduction of an electronic identity card and digital signature system across Seychelles.
Contrast With Abu Dhabi’s Tourism-Tax Removal
In a contrasting move, Abu Dhabi recently abolished its 10 % tourism tax on event organisers. Announced to bolster investment appeal and spur event bookings, the repeal still requires organisers to obtain an event-specific licence under new local regulations—giving authorities tighter oversight while offering greater flexibility to industry players.
