Tunisia extends visa-free entry for European tourists this summer

Tunisia waives passport requirements for organized European tour groups through October 2023, aiming to boost tourism amid prolonged French passport renewal delays.

As tourism recovers from months of disruption, Tunisia is streamlining entry rules to welcome back international visitors. Destinations worldwide are reviving travel demand through relaxed visa policies, including waivers, digital visas and extended stays.

Tunisia welcomes European tour groups without passports

To attract European tourists and revive local businesses, Tunisia has introduced a temporary policy allowing organized tour groups from Europe to enter without passports, using only a valid national identity card (CNI). The move addresses ongoing passport-renewal backlogs in countries like France and other EU states.

Extended until 31 October 2023, the initiative applies only to groups booked through licensed travel agencies. Independent travellers must continue to follow standard entry procedures. The policy is designed to encourage package tours, supporting Tunisia’s vital tourism sector.

Note: several airlines this year have barred passengers travelling with only a CNI. Verify boarding requirements with your airline before departure.

What to do if your summer passport has expired

Still waiting on a delayed passport renewal? Many countries now accept a valid French national identity card, reducing the urgency of traditional passport requirements. Consider destinations where a CNI is sufficient for entry this summer.

As processing delays persist, several outlets have compiled destinations accepting the French CNI instead of a passport. Popular European choices include Spain, Italy and Greece, while non-European options such as Turkey also offer passport-free access. These alternatives help travellers book getaways despite administrative delays.

France accelerates passport issuance ahead of peak summer

French authorities acknowledge that strict passport wait times are hindering holiday planning. Additional staff and streamlined processes have been deployed to reduce backlogs this summer. Renewal delays should ease, though carrying a passport remains advisable for most international trips.

Tunisia’s passport-free initiative presents a timely solution for Europeans caught between slow renewals and last-minute vacation plans. By removing paperwork barriers, the country invites travellers to explore its beaches, culture and cuisine with minimal hassle.
