Oman extends visa-free entry for cruise passengers to 10 days

Oman has extended visa-free cruise entry to 10 days, aiming to boost tourism by allowing longer exploration of its cultural and natural treasures.

Oman’s entry policy for cruise passengers has been updated in Decision No. 132/2024, extending visa-free stays to 10 days from the previous 72-hour limit. This change aims to encourage more cruise passengers to explore the Sultanate and discover its rich cultural and natural attractions.

The initiative was announced by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsen Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Royal Oman Police and Customs, highlighting Oman’s commitment to enhancing cruise tourism.

Minister of Heritage and Tourism Salim Mohammad Al Mahrouqi emphasized the importance of the move: “We are thrilled to welcome more visitors through this extension of visa-free stays, allowing cruise passengers to experience Oman’s beauty and hospitality.”

Technical details of the visa extension

The 10-day free visa applies exclusively to cruise ship passengers and crew members. It must be used within 30 days of issuance and is non-transferable. The arrangement simplifies visa processing, as it is issued upon arrival at Omani ports, removing barriers for cruise travelers. Alternatively, a 30-day visa can be obtained for a fee upon arrival.

No nationality restrictions have been announced for the 10-day exemptions, though the policy aligns with Oman’s existing 14-day visa-free entry for air travelers, further boosting its appeal as a destination.

Impact on Oman’s cruise industry

By the end of the year, Oman expects over 100,000 international cruise travelers, with 142 scheduled port calls. In 2022 alone, 85,092 cruise passengers visited Oman—a figure expected to grow with this policy. To support this influx, the government has invested in upgraded port infrastructure.

The ports of Muscat, Salalah, and Khasab have been modernized to accommodate larger cruise ships and ensure seamless disembarkation experiences for passengers.

While other Gulf Cooperation Council countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar offer visa facilitation, such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar do, Oman stands out with its extended visa-free cruise policy.
