Kenya raises national park entry fees from 2024

Kenya will increase national park entry fees for all visitor types starting January 2024, raising concerns about tourism sector impacts as online payment systems add operational hurdles for operators.

Entry into a Kenyan national park will soon cost more, following the government’s decision to raise prices for all visitor categories starting in January 2024. According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the move aims to generate greater revenue for the protection and maintenance of natural areas. However, the fee increase has raised concerns about its potential impact on the tourism sector and travelers’ choices.

Complicated payment process for tourism operators

In addition to the rate hike, the introduction of a mandatory online payment system has caused frustration among local tour operators. As Mohammed Hersi, chair of the Diani Beach Hotel Owners Association, noted, the new payment process has proven particularly burdensome for businesses struggling to serve an exacting international clientele. Several travelers have reportedly been turned away at park gates after being unable to complete online payments.

  • Kenyan adults and other East African Community citizens will pay $14 to enter urban parks like Nairobi National Park, both in high and low seasons.

  • Visitors arriving from the rest of Africa will pay $20.

  • International tourists will pay approximately $100.

Tariff comparison with neighboring countries

The increase comes as other regional countries seek to attract more visitors by lowering their national park entry fees. Tanzania has recently cut entry fees for East African citizens to encourage cross-border travel. The Kenyan price hike may thus reduce visitor numbers at Kenyan sites and escalate competition with other African destinations.

Concrete example: Amboseli and Lake Nakuru national parks

Here are the new fee structures proposed for these two landmark parks:

  • During high season, East African Community adult residents will be charged 1 000 KES (€6) while adults from other African regions and international visitors will pay $50 and $100 respectively.

  • In low season, East African Community adult residents will pay 800 KES (€4.80) to enter the park, with visitors from other African regions charged $35 and international tourists $80.

What impact on Kenya’s tourism future?

Beyond the challenges presented by the mandatory online payment system, the price increase is expected to negatively affect Kenya’s tourism sector. International travelers may opt for cheaper African destinations offering similar experiences.
