Sri Lanka Restarts Free Tourist Visa Program for 40 Countries
Sri Lanka waives visa fees for tourists from 40 countries to reinvigorate its tourism sector, effective immediately. Discover eligibility, rules, and simplified application steps.
Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to revitalize its tourism industry. In a move eagerly awaited by the travel industry, the Sri Lankan government has confirmed the introduction of a free tourist visa program for nationals of 40 countries. Travelers from these countries can benefit from the program if visiting Sri Lanka for a short stay—whether for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
This initiative was being discussed since July 2025 and was formally approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on March 30, 2026. The program is now officially in effect, and eligible travelers can obtain an exemption from visa fees based on their nationality.

Why is Sri Lanka Waiving Visa Fees?
Approved by the Cabinet at the urging of the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, this initiative is part of a six-month pilot program. Colombo’s stated goals are straightforward:
Boost the destination’s financial attractiveness compared to regional competitors.
Support the post-crisis recovery of Sri Lanka’s local tourism sector.
Ease international travel flows into the country.
Is Your Passport Eligible?
The program targets strategic source markets—both historical ones and emerging growth regions. Here is the list of eligible nationalities, organized by geography:
Europe
Germany, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland
Americas
Canada, United States
Asia & Oceania
Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand
Middle East & Central Asia
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Turkey
The government initially announced that 39 nationalities would qualify. However, the official list shows 40 countries included.
Not on the list? You can still travel.
For travelers from Africa, Latin America, and other non-listed countries, the standard ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) process remains in place, with customary consular fees applying. Our team processes these applications daily, ensuring an expedited procedure to prevent delays in obtaining travel authorization.
Free Visa Fees vs. Visa-Free Entry: Know the Difference
Many travelers confuse fee waivers (Visa Fee Waiver) with true visa-free entry. Here’s what you need to know:
Pre-arrival registration remains mandatory: You will still likely need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA / e-Visa) before your trip.
What changes: The government fee—normally charged for the ETA—will be reduced to $0 for eligible nationalities (excluding any service fees if you seek assistance to complete the application).
On arrival: At Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), you must present a valid passport (with at least six months’ validity) and proof of your approved travel authorization.
Avoid the risk of showing up at the airport without documents on the assumption the visa is "free." Airlines will deny boarding to travelers without proper authorization.
