UK ETA Required for Entry Starting 25 February 2026: Full Guide

All travelers to the UK—including EU and visa-exempt nationals—must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure starting 25 February 2026, with no exceptions for transit or minors. Here’s everything you need to know about the UK ETA, application steps, exemptions, and advice to secure approval before your trip.

"No permission, no travel." The UK Home Office’s ultimatum is now in force. Since 25 February 2026, British border authorities strictly enforce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. No boarding is permitted for the UK—including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—without a government-approved ETA.

What is the UK ETA?

The ETA functions as the UK’s version of America’s ESTA or the EU’s ETIAS—an electronic travel permit linked digitally to your passport, not a full visa. Rolled out from 2023 for Gulf nationals, widened in 2025 to cover Americans, Canadians, Australians, Europeans and others, enforcement becomes fully mandatory in February 2026. Its purpose: pre-screen visitors for biographic, biometric and security red flags before they step on a plane or Eurostar.

Who must apply for a UK ETA?

The rule is simple and broad: every traveler who would otherwise enter the UK passport-free must secure an ETA, regardless of age or itinerary.

You need a UK ETA if you:

  • Hold an EU passport (French, Belgian, Swiss, etc.).

  • Come from a visa-exempt country (United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.).

  • Are traveling for tourist, business, conference, private visit, medical treatment, or even an airport transit stop.

  • Are accompanied by children or infants (each person requires a separate ETA).

You do NOT need a UK ETA if you:

  • Are a British or Irish citizen.

  • Have dual nationality (for example French-British) and travel on a valid UK passport.

  • Already possess a valid UK visa for work, study, or family reunion.

  • Are a legal Irish resident traveling within the Common Travel Area (CTA).

How to obtain your UK ETA: a step-by-step guide

Apply exclusively via the official UK ETA app (iOS/Android) or the GOV.UK web portal. Be ready with a valid passport (the one you’ll travel on), a debit or credit card and a secure email address. Upload a clear scan of your passport bio page, supply a biometric facial image (selfie or photo), and answer questions regarding personal information and security history. The processing fee for most applicants is £16. The Home Office has hinted at a possible increase to £20 in coming months. Fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome.

Agency advice: Although the Home Office claims “minutes” in most automated cases, manual checks still occur; processing can take longer if extra verification is needed. We strongly recommend applying at least three full business days (72 hours) before departure to avoid last-minute airport denials. Pay close attention to document quality—blurry selfies, glare on passport scans or poor lighting can trigger rejections. Only sharp, well-lit images are accepted, and every detail must match your passport exactly. Our agency specialises in streamlining ETA applications and can assist you in securing approval.
