Canada: "milder" measures planned for certain types of travellers

Like many countries, Canada keeps its borders closed to all travel considered "secondary".

In light of all the criticism of the Canadian government's lack of flexibility, Ottawa has unveiled exceptional measures for international families and students. Since October 8, extended family members of Canadians or permanent residents have been able to enter Canada (they will need to provide an attestation and isolate themselves for 14 days on arrival).
As of October 20, international students will be able to return to Canada, provided they are enrolled in a school whose Covid-19 response plan has been approved by the provincial government.

As announced by Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair, the current measures concerning all non-US flights to Canada will be extended until October 31, 2020. The U.S. border will remain closed to "non-essential" travel until October 21.

Like many other countries around the world, Canada has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first cases of COVID-19 were reported in Canada in January 2020, and since then the number of cases and deaths has risen significantly.

According to figures reported by the Public Health Agency of Canada between January and December 2020, there were a total of 566,724 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada. Of these, 14,880 cases resulted in death.

The number of cases and deaths varies from province to province. Ontario and Quebec were the provinces hardest hit by the pandemic. In Ontario, there were a total of 238,745 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 5,614 deaths. In Quebec, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 was 250,491, resulting in 9,361 deaths.

The federal and provincial governments have taken steps to try and curb the spread of the virus, including closing schools, non-essential businesses and borders, and imposing public health guidelines such as face masks, social distancing, self-isolation and mandatory quarantine.
