Algeria: Visa exemption for dual nationals extended to 2027

If you are an Algerian national living abroad (binationals, such as Franco-Algerians, Belgo-Algerians, etc.), the Algerian authorities have just announced that the exceptional arrangements for visa-free entry are renewed until December 31, 2026.

What's changing (and what's staying the same)

Initially designed to cope with the summer rush, these โ€œexceptional and derogatoryโ€ measures are now valid for a further two years.

โš ๏ธ Official deadline: December 31, 2026
This waiver allows you to enter and leave Algeria without first obtaining a visa, even if your Algerian identity documents are no longer up to date.

Visa-free entry requirements

To travel with peace of mind, you must meet one of the following two criteria. Please note that presentation of a valid foreign passport (French, Canadian, Belgian, etc.) is the compulsory common base.

Case 1: You have a Biometric Identity Card (CNIBE)

It's the ideal scenario. You can travel with :
โœ… Your foreign passport (valid).
โœ… Your National Biometric and Electronic Identity Card (CNIBE).

๐Ÿ‘‰ The plus : The CNIBE is accepted even if it has expired.

Case 2: You do not have an identity card (CNIBE)

If you don't have a biometric card, you can use your old passport, under one strict condition:
โœ… Your foreign passport (valid).
โœ… Your Algerian passport biometric.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The plus : This Algerian passport is accepted even if expired.
โŒ Attention: Old non-biometric โ€œgreenโ€ passports are generally not accepted in this context.

Families travelling with children under 15, who do not yet have Algerian papers, also benefit from this flexibility.

Documents to present to the PAF (Border Police) :

  • The child's valid foreign passport.
  • Proof of parentage or relationship :
  • Family record book.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Family sheet.

For legal guardians : Documents attesting to status (Kafala, guardianship decree).

A word of caution: noun concordance
It's a detail that often gets in the way of travelers at check-in counters. If the spelling of your name differs between your foreign passport and your Algerian documents, be prepared:
Minor difference (one letter): It is recommended to have an โ€œattestation d'individualitรฉโ€ (issued by the consulate).
Substantial difference (totally different name) : A court order will be required.

Although this measure is a huge relief for the diaspora, bear in mind that it remains transitional. Consulates (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, etc.) are urging their nationals not to wait until the last minute (end of 2026) to regularize their situation.

Take advantage of this period to start renewing your Algerian biometric passports in the โ€œoff-peak periodโ€ to avoid saturation of consular services.
