European Union: EES to come into force on October 12, 2025

The European Union will implement the input-output system (EES)is a major step in the modernization of the management of the Schengen area's external borders. This system mainly concerns third-country nationals arriving for a short stay, whether they need a visa or not. This new system, which has been in deployment since 2022, will finally be launched on October 12, 2025.

The EES system will replace manual buffer on passports, with fully digital collection of information linked to travelers' passage: their name, passport number, photo and fingerprints, as well as the date, time and place of entry into and exit from the Schengen area. Refusal of entry will also be recorded. These data will be stored for three years in a centralized database.

The main objective of EES is to effective control of short-term staysA new online tool will enable travelers to check the number of days they have left in the Schengen area, i.e. a maximum of 90 days out of a 180-day period. An online tool will enable travelers to check the number of days remaining in the Schengen area.

Progressive implementation by the Schengen States

This new system will gradually be applied to all the external borders of Schengen member states. It will have no impact on EU citizens or legal residents, nor on holders of long-stay visas or special residence permits.

New entry process

For travellers concerned, it will now be necessary to scan their passport on a dedicated terminal every time you cross an external border, perform a fingerprints or a photowhich will be compared with those in stock. The introduction of this system could lead to additional waiting times at borders, but information and awareness campaigns are planned to accompany the transition.

The ETIAS expected in 2026

THE ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will correspond to electronic travel authorization created by the European Union. This approach will required for entry into a European Union country and will apply to all visa-exempt nationalities.

Its launch is scheduled for late 2026Its introduction will be gradual. Authorities indicate that it will be mandatory by 2027. Recently, a ETIAS tariff change has been announced. The initial price of โ‚ฌ7 would be โ‚ฌ20.

Nationals of 59 countries visa-exempt should be eligible for ETIAS travel authorization.
