Laos is preparing to modernize its border procedures considerably, with the launch of a trial version of its new digital check-in system and departuresin force since September 1. This initiative marks a turning point, abandoning traditional paper immigration forms in favor of an online platform for all foreign passport holders.
Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF)
Laotian digital immigration form is designed for simplify border procedures by requiring travelers to submit their information online within three days prior to arrival and departure. Via this digital platform, visitors will be asked to provide essential details such as passport information, visa details, travel plans and intended address(es) during their stay in Laos.
The procurement process
The new system applies to all foreign nationals entering the country by air or land. Simply visit the https://www.immigration.gov.la/en/home and choose the form associated with your request (arrival in Laos or departure from Laos). All requests are free of charge. Once the form has been finalized on your side, a QR code will be issued and you will need to present it at immigration.
The digital recording system will be available in Lao, English and Chinese. Initial deployment will take place in four international entry points keys :
- Wattay international airport in Vientiane
- Luang Prabang international airport
- Pakse international airport
- The first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, linking Vientiane to Thailand's Nong Khai province.
A few exceptions
However, there are exemptions: Thai citizens who use a border pass rather than a passport will be exempt from this online registration requirement during the trial period. Similarly, Laotian citizens and foreigners who have obtained permanent residence in Laos are not required to register via this new platform, and can continue to use existing procedures at immigration checkpoints.
The Laotian government plans to monitor and evaluate the system over a 2-year trial periodwith full nationwide implementation targeted for 2026.
