India expands categories of its electronic visa

The Indian government recently announced the expansion of the categories of its electronic visa (e-visa) in order to include new reasons for travel, thereby significantly simplifying the process for many international travelers.

This initiative aligns with the Indian government's ongoing efforts to streamline and accelerate immigration processes. By expanding access to electronic visas, India aims to promote international travel and make visiting and staying in the country easier for foreign nationals.

New categories of e-visas

The Indian government has added four new categories to its electronic visa system: the transit, l'mountaineering, THE cinema, investment in electronic production and theentrance (intended for persons of Indian origin).

Extending the e-visa to these categories will simplify the application process by eliminating the need to visit a consulate and ensuring faster processing times. Processing e-visa applications should take between 24 and 78 hours, a significantly faster turnaround time than traditional consular processing.

Citizens of eligible countries can complete the entire online e-visa process, although they must obtain authorization from the relevant ministry if necessary. Before traveling to India, they must have received the approved Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel to India. Once in India, foreign nationals will have to report to immigration control to register their biometric data, and the visa will then be affixed to their passport.
