Sri Lanka: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) mandatory from October 15, 2025

From October 15all travellers wishing to visit Sri Lanka will once again need to obtain a electronic travel authorization (ETA) before their arrival on the territory.

This new update, effective after a Supreme Court ruling, cancels the eVisa platform introduced earlier this year and marks a return to the previously applicable system. An official press release was published by several Sri Lankan Embassies, including Embassy in France.

Electronic Visa (e-Visa) replaced by Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

The ETA requirement had initially been replaced by a new eVisa platform in April 2024. However, just four months later, the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of this new platform and a return to the ETA system. One notable difference is that all travelers must have obtained electronic travel authorization, prior to arrival in Sri Lanka. Once you're on site, you won't be able to obtain any more.

Free ETA fees for 40 nationals

Since July 2025, 40 nationalities benefit from free ETA electronic travel authorization. However, it is still compulsory to make the request online, before arrival.

Travel advice

To avoid any delays when entering the ports of arrival, tourists are strongly advised to submit their ETA application online and before departure.

The ETA is therefore officially reinstated as a standard entry requirement for travelers visiting Sri Lanka for tourism purposes.
