The Senegalese government is rolling out electronic visas (e-visa).

Senegal has recently modified its immigration policy by introducing a electronic visa system (e-visa) for nationals of countries that apply visa requirements to Senegalese nationals. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced that travelers will now have to pay their visa application fees online before arrival. This reform is part of a drive to modernize and secure Senegal's migration infrastructure.

The authorities say the measure should improve administrative security, reduce the risk of abuse and simplify procedures for immigration authorities. Online prepayment is intended to increase transparency, limit congestion at border crossings and ensure that only eligible applicants complete the procedure.

Vision "Senegal 2050

This announcement comes as the country pursues its ambitions for economic transformation, defined in its strategic vision "Senegal 2050" and the new National Economic and Social Recovery Plan. Backed by the administration of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the reform aims to restore Senegal's fiscal sovereignty and strengthen its regional and international role. The government expects to generate around 60 billion CFA francs from e-visa fees.

Electronic visas (e-visa) under development

Which countries are concerned?

Politics is based on the principle of reciprocity: any state requiring Senegalese nationals to have a visa will apply the same conditions to their entry into Senegal. The countries concerned are expected to include France, the USA, Canada, the UK and China. At present, e-visa not yet in force. It has not been officially announced how this will be obtained, what the consular fees will be, or which nationalities will be concerned.

Senegal and its regional and international role

With this measure, Senegal joins other African countries such as Namibia which have recently adopted reciprocal visa policies, marking a desire to assert balance in international relations and migration management.
