The introduction of the electronic visa system (e-Visa) in Tunisia, initially scheduled for 2025, has just been postponed. to a later date due to the failure of the international tender process launched in September 2024 by the Ministry of Communication Technologies. None of the eight candidates - Tunisian and international companies - met the technical or administrative requirements set out in the specifications. Some proposals were even rejected for non-compliance with basic bidding rules.
Deployment of the secure platform
Candidates included Orell Fรผssli AG & EWM (Switzerland), SITA Advanced Travel Solutions (UK), Mรผhlbauer (Germany), three Tunisian consortia (MEDIANET, THINKTANK & MAVIANCE, MEDIADIFFUSION, VFS Global, NUMERYX), Addinn, Aira & ELM (France) and EY (Tunisia). Despite this broad interest, no applications were received to develop, maintain and manage a future secure platform, including online payment and automatic document verification.
This setback will delay the digitization of the visa process at a time when the authorities were hoping to be able to facilitate entry to the country and stimulate the tourism sector thanks to a fully online procedure. An official press release presents the results of the bids. The Ministry has not yet announced a new timetable for the launch of a new call for tenders.
What are the options for travelers?
Until the project is relaunched, the travellers concerned must continue to submit their visa applications via Tunisian consulates and embassies, in accordance with the traditional procedure.
Most foreign nationals can travel to Tunisia without a visa, for stays of up to 3 months. These include European, American and Asian travelers. You can check your eligibility at the Tunisian embassy closest to your place of residence.
Tunisia's tourism sector plays a key role in the national economy and the authorities consider that an electronic visa system would be a lever for attracting more foreign visitors. By simplifying access to the country, such a platform would bring Tunisia closer to the many destinations that have already adopted online visa issuance. However, as long as no new service provider has been selected to implement the project, the old visa system will remain in force.
