Many regions of the UK are economically highly dependent on their airports. In a bid to revitalize the air transport sector, the British government is studying the possibility of lowering or even abolishing airport taxes for domestic flights. The tax currently stands at £13 per passenger per flight.
While industry professionals welcome the decision, environmentalists see it as a step backwards in the government's pledge to reduce C02 emissions.
But nothing is decided yet, as consultations on this subject will take place in the spring.
With this move, Boris Johnson also intends to meet an objective he set himself during his campaign: to reduce territorial inequalities.
