Elections in Bangladesh: Suspension of visas on arrival to reinforce security

The government of Bangladesh has announced the temporary suspension of visas on arrival (VoA) for a one-month period from January 15 to February 15. This measure comes against a backdrop of security tensions in the run-up to the national parliamentary elections and a referendum on constitutional reforms, scheduled for February 12.

A measure affecting neighboring countries and missions in India

This decision affects all the countries that usually benefit from these facilities, including neighbouring countries such as Bhutan and Nepal. The Bangladeshi government has officially communicated this suspension to the authorities of these countries. At the same time, the issue of visas has also been suspended in the main Bangladesh diplomatic missions in India, with no prospect of recovery before the end of the election.

Preventing electoral violence

Although the authorities have not given explicit reasons for this decision, it is widely accepted that it is intended to securing borders and to prevent any potential violence during the election period. The election campaign, due to start on January 22, In the coming months, a large number of party leaders are expected to gather across the country, necessitating increased surveillance to prevent any outbursts.

Regular visa issuance remains in force

Since January 15, 2026, many French nationals can no longer obtain a visa on arrival. For French citizens, it is therefore necessary to request a visa from Bangladesh Embassy in France. Travel formalities, and in particular entry into the country, must be anticipated.

ยซWe're not suspending the issue of visas. Let them come with regular visas, not with visas on arrival.ยป

In the run-up to the elections, Bangladesh stepped up its internal security measures considerably:

  • The army has been deployed throughout the country and is currently setting up strategic checkpoints
  • The interim government has granted magistrate powers for military personnel to make their work easier
  • The national police force has received instructions from extreme vigilance in the performance of his duties.

This preventive approach is not unprecedented, as similar measures have already been adopted at previous elections in the country to guarantee the maintenance of order.

As a customer relations officer, my role is to manage and monitor visa applications. I keep abreast of new travel formalities and the specific features of new visas.
