Fee waiver vs. visa waiver

Many travellers confuse visa fee waiver (Visa Fee Waiver) and visa exemption (Visa Free Entry). In practical terms, even if the Sri Lankan government abolishes the government tax for these countries :

  • Pre-registration remains compulsory: You will most likely still need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA / e-Visa) before departure.
  • What's new : The cost of this authorization will rise to 0 $ for consular fees (excluding service charges if you wish to obtain assistance with your application).
  • Customs control : On arrival at Colombo airport (BIA), you will need to present a passport valid for at least 6 months and proof of your approved travel authorization.

Don't take the risk of presenting yourself at the boarding gate without any documents, on the pretext that the visa is โ€œfreeโ€: the airline will refuse you boarding.
