Faced with recent airspace closures and massive flight cancellations in the region, many international travelers find themselves stranded in Saudi Arabia. To prevent a logistical crisis from turning into an administrative and financial nightmare, the Saudi Ministry of Interior (MOI) has implemented an exceptional emergency measure.
Saudi directives: What you need to know
The Saudi government offers a strict compliance window, but one that may allow international travelers to remain in good standing despite the expiry of their current visa. If you're stuck in the territory, here are the conditions of this measure:
๐
Directive deadline : April 18, 2026
โฑ๏ธ Key eligibility criteria: Your travel document must have expired on or after February 25, 2026.
๐ Eligible visa categories : Visitor visas (all types), Umrah visas, transit visas and permanent exit permits (final exit permits).
๐ฐ The financial stakes: Dodging fines for overstaying (overstay penalties) up to 50,000 SAR (more than โฌ12,000 or 13,000 $).
This directive draws a clear line between travellers who were victims of the recent disruptions (after February 25) and those who had previously been in an irregular situation. It does not create a new resident status, but offers an immediate legal way out.
Your 2 legal options: What should you do?
MOI has planned two distinct routes depending on your personal situation and flight availability.
- Option 1: Penalty-Free Exit
For whom? Travelers who have managed to find a flight home or an overland exit.
How does it work? You are allowed to leave Saudi Arabia through any international port or airport without paying the usual overstay penalties.
The advantage: This is the quickest way. It closes your stay, preserves your immigration history and guarantees that you won't be banned the next time you enter the country.
- Option 2: Electronic visa extension
For whom? Travellers whose flights are still cancelled or who need more time on site for family or safety reasons.
How does it work? You can't do this on your own. Your host or local sponsor (company, agency or individual) must connect to the government portals Absher Or Muqeem to process an electronic extension.
The advantage: You remain completely legal while you wait for the air situation to normalize. Please note: although the delay fine has been waived, standard government visa extension fees still apply.
โ ๏ธ Don't confuse consular guidelines with Saudi immigration laws
Whether you're a European, American or Asian national, it's crucial to distinguish between the recommendations of your embassy and local laws.
For example, the US State Department recently issued travel alerts (Level 3) and suspended certain services at its embassy in Riyadh due to the security context. However, foreign embassy guidelines do not replace Saudi immigration rules. Even if your diplomatic representation advises you to leave, you must go through the options dictated by the Saudi MOI (exit or extension) before the fateful date to avoid being considered an outlaw.
Our agency's advice:
- Check the exact expiry date of your current visa. If the date is before February 25, 2026, this measure does not apply to you, and you risk heavy fines.
- Contact your sponsor immediately. If you're traveling on business or staying with a resident, make sure he or she has active access on Absher Or Muqeem. Systems can become saturated as the deadline approaches.
- Keep up to date with official sources. Emergencies change fast. Check out the Saudi Ministry of Interior's announcements (especially on X :
@MOISaudiArabia). - Don't wait until April 17. Process your application today. Last-minute technical problems on government platforms are no excuse for overruns.
