Digital Nomad Visa: Italy finally implements its 2022 decision

Italy finally implements its 2022 decision to launch a digital nomad visaallowing remote workers from all over the world to reside and work legally in this beautiful country.

Eligibility criteria for the digital nomad visa in Italy

Needless to say, this visa is mainly aimed at self-employed workers and employees who work remotely for companies located outside Italy. However, there are also a few other specific requirements that must be met:

  • Minimum annual income Applicants must earn at least €32400 a year or €2700 a month + €30,000 in savings.
  • Medical insurance They must have adequate medical insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in Italy.
  • Housing They must have planned and organized accommodation for their stay, or even have bought their accommodation in Italy.
  • Skills The program aims to attract highly skilled non-European workers, usually with a university degree or significant professional experience.

Freelancers and remote workers: the visa is for everyone

The Italian digital nomad visa is designed to suit both freelancers and employees working remotely for foreign companies. The 2 categories must meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above, with a few minor differences in terms of required proof of employment or work contracts. In the latter case, 6 months' telecommuting experience must already have taken place before applying for the visa.

Although the distinction is made between "digital nomads" for freelancers and "remote workers" for employees, the application process and benefits offered are broadly very similar.

The advantages of the Italian digital nomad visa

  1. Long-term stay This visa allows individuals to work legally in Italy for up to one year, and then extend their stay for up to 2 additional years. The digital nomad's relatives can then request family reunification if necessary.
  2. Wide range of eligible professions The program does not restrict eligible professions, as long as you are highly qualified and can work remotely for a company outside Italy.
  3. Quality living in Italy One of the most attractive aspects of the Italian digital nomad visa is the opportunity to enjoy the excellent quality of life offered by the country, including gastronomy, culture, natural and architectural beauty, and of course, the Mediterranean climate.
  4. Connection to other European countries The visa also enables effortless travel to other countries in the Schengen area, giving digital nomads the chance to explore more of Europe while working remotely from Italy.

Although this program is very promising, there are still a few concerns and challenges to consider:

  • Lack of free health care Digital nomad visa holders do not have access to the free Italian public healthcare system, and must therefore take out private medical insurance.
  • Uncertain visa conversion options It is not yet clear whether Digital Nomad visa holders will be able to convert their visa to another type of residence or work permit after the initial one-year period.
