In a major step forward for bilateral relations, the Brazil and the Mexico have taken a decisive step towards facilitating travel between the two nations. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently unveiled an agreement with its Mexican counterpart to set up a mutual electronic visa system. This initiative aims to simplify tourist and business travel for citizens of both countries.
According to the details of the agreementThe traditional physical visa will no longer be necessary. As a result, Mexican and Brazilian travelers will be able to avoid the often tedious process of visiting consulates to collect their documents. Although the new system is not yet operational, Brazilian government sources have indicated that it will be in the coming months. While Mexicans didn't need a visa until now, Brazilians had to go to the embassy to visit Mexico.
This initiative is part of a wider move to exempt Brazilian and Mexican citizens from visa requirements when visiting their respective countries. Mauro VieiraMexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs, underlined the importance of this agreement by declaring that Mexico would be the 2nd country, after Japan on October 1, 2023, to lift visa restrictions for Brazilian tourists.
An agreement under negotiation for several months
It should be noted that this agreement has been in preparation since April, and was negotiated in close collaboration with the Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bardina Ibarra. In an official statement at the 5th meeting of the Brazil-Mexico Binational Commission, the State Department expressed optimism about the e-Visa's effectiveness: "The joint adoption of e-Visas will enable Brazilian and Mexican citizens to apply for visitor visas for tourism and business in both countries quickly, securely and without having to visit consular offices..”
Historically, the e-visa system had already been implemented by both countries for certain periods. However, technical and administrative challenges had hampered its effectiveness. With this new initiative, the 2 nations hope to overcome these obstacles and offer their citizens a smoother travel experience.
