Turkey and Saudi Arabia have signed a mutual visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and special passports. The agreement was concluded in Ankara at the meeting of the Turkish-Saudi Coordination Council, attended by the foreign ministers of both countries.
This measure facilitates official travel between Ankara and Riyadh, within a bilateral framework already reinforced by diplomatic cooperation. At this stage, it does not concern holders of ordinary passports, who remain subject to the usual visa rules.
Official sources confirm
According to the press release relayed by official Saudi channels, the agreement provides for reciprocal visa exemption for diplomatic and special passports.
On the Turkish side, official communications linked to the Ankara meeting also indicate that the signing of the agreement was part of the outcome of the 3rd meeting of the Turkey-Saudi Arabia Coordination Council.
| Before this signature, Reuters had already indicated that an agreement was expected during talks between the foreign ministers, on the basis of a Turkish diplomatic source. The agency then specified that the initiative was initially intended to cover ordinary and diplomatic passports, but subsequent communiquรฉs show a more restricted scope. |
For ordinary travellers, this does not mean a general abolition of visas between the two countries. In practice, nationals involved in official travel have a more flexible framework, while other categories remain subject to the usual procedures.
For tourism, Turks can currently travel with an e-Visa to Saudi Arabia, while Saudi nationals enjoy a 60-day exemption in Turkey.
