This program, run by the US State Department, offers up to 55,000 immigrant visas a year to people from countries with low immigration rates to the USA.
How does it work?
The principle is simple: it's a draw. But make no mistake, this is no ordinary game of chance. You have to meet very specific criteria to have a chance of being selected.
Who can participate?
First things first: your country of birth is crucial. If you were born in a country that sends a lot of immigrants to the U.S., such as Canada, China, India, Mexico or the U.K., you can forget about participating. These countries are systematically excluded from the program.
But don't despair! If your spouse was born in an eligible country, you can use his/her nationality to apply. Clever, isn't it?
Criteria to be met
A baccalaureate or equivalent is the minimum requirement. Otherwise, you need at least 2 years' professional experience in a trade that requires two years' training. Visit The U.S. Department of Labor has a very precise list of these professions.so check before you leap.
When and how to apply?
Make a note of these dates: October 2 to November 5, 2024noon Washington time. That's the window to apply for the DV-2026 program. And don't leave it to the last minute - the site can be overloaded!

What if I'm selected?
Being selected does not guarantee a visa. You'll still have to pass interviews, medical examinations, and prove that you can afford to settle in the United States.
