After four years of total closure following the events of February 2022, a glimmer of hope is emerging for commercial aviation in Eastern Europe. The Ukrainian authorities, in close collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), are actively preparing the reopening of their airspace.

Lviv: Ukraine's new gateway to the future
Unlike Kiev-Boryspil airport (the country's largest), it's theโLviv International Airport (in the west of Ukraine, close to the Polish border) has been designated as the starting point for this reopening. Why Lviv?
For his geo-strategic positioning, Its proximity to the Schengen area (Poland) makes it easy to secure air corridors.
For his distance from conflict zones active. Although there is no such thing as zero risk, the west of the country is considerably less exposed.
For international travellers, Lviv has always been a popular destination. transit hub interesting. At present, entry to Ukraine is by land from the Schengen area (Poland, Slovakia, Romania), often requiring a visa. double-entry schengen visa or multiple-entry to guarantee your return. The reopening of Lviv to direct international flights would drastically simplify customs formalities.
Which airlines serve the country?
The aviation landscape has changed radically since 2022. The historic national airline Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) went bankrupt at the end of 2023 due to the drastic fall in its revenues and the recall of its fleet by rental companies. The country no longer has a national carrier.
However, European low-cost airlines are already positioning themselves. Wizz Air has publicly expressed its interest in resuming operations as soon as safety conditions are certified. Initial flights will be limited, however, and will take place within strictly controlled air corridors.
Safety and Travel Insurance
Restarting commercial flights is not just a political decision, it's a colossal operational challenge.
Insurance coverage : It's the sinews of war. Airlines need massive insurance approvals to operate.
The air threat : The unpredictability of drone strikes (including recently in the Lviv region) demands state-of-the-art risk mitigation systems. Ukraine remembers the tragedy of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014 and will leave no room for chance.
Rebuilding infrastructure : Navigation and air traffic control systems are to be fully audited and partially rebuilt.
Impact on international travelers : When flights are opened, subscribing to a specific โRisk zoneโ travel insuranceโ will be imperative. Most standard insurance policies still exclude this territory.
What will change for intercontinental flights?
Since 2022, the mandatory bypassing of Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian airspace has lengthened global flight times. By way of example, some Europe-Asia routes (such as Finnair flights to Tokyo) have suffered extensions of up to 3.5 hours, with routes diverted via the North Pole.
The reopening, albeit partial, of Ukrainian airspace marks the start of a long-awaited normalization:
- Flight time reduction between Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
- Lower carbon footprint and fuel costs for airlines.
- Possible stabilization of ticket prices on these high-traffic routes.
Checklist for travellers
Although buying plane tickets to Ukraine is not yet an immediate priority, here's how to plan ahead if you have work or family commitments in the region:
โCheck your visa eligibility : Citizens of many countries (outside the EU/USA/Canada) require a visa for Ukraine.
โSettle the Schengen question: If you plan to transit through a neighboring country (Poland, Hungary), make sure that your Schengen visa is valid.
โPrepare your supporting documents: Border controls, even at a reopened airport, will include strict security checks (reasons for travel, financial resources, certified insurance).
