The Cook Islands, a self-governing archipelago in free association with New Zealand, is about to take a major step towards modernizing its immigration procedures. The Cook Islands government has announced the imminent launch of its new electronic visa system, scheduled for mid-September 2024. This initiative - which began in 2022 - aims to simplify and speed up the visa application process for international visitors.
How the new Cook Islands e-visa system works
Travelers will be able to submit their visa application electronically in the Cook Islands, eliminating the need to physically visit an embassy or consulate. The secure platform will enable applicants to complete an online form, upload the necessary documents and pay the visa fee directly.
Visa categories concerned
The Cook Islands e-visa system will be available for the following categories:
- Tourist visa
- Business Visa
- Residence permits
It is important to note that this new system will cover both visa and residence permit applications, offering a complete solution for different types of travelers and temporary residents.
Gradual implementation
The e-visa system is gradually being rolled out by the Cook Islands government. Initially, the system will be tested internally to ensure that it works properly. It will then be made available to a number of countries before being extended to all eligible travelers.
Rarotonga International Airport, one of the Cook Islands' main points of entry, will be equipped with computerized systems for checking electronic visas. This equipment will make it easier and more efficient to check travellers on arrival.
