July 1, 2023 marks a significant turning point in the history of the Equatorial Guineawith the introduction of e-Visa, a new travel formality for tourists and business travelers. Initially scheduled for 2019, this step forward has suffered several delays, notably due to the Covid health crisis, but is now ready for launch.
This breakthrough was announced at an e-Visa launch ceremony held on June 15, where Equatoguinean Prime Minister Manuela Roka Botey stressed the importance of this milestone for the country. She declared that the official launch of e-Visa is "the the result of everyone's hard work, determination and perseverance on the part of the Vice-President of the Republic to bring this project to fruition“.
The launch of the online visa will not cancel the traditional visa for the time being. The two systems will coexist for a flexible transition period of around 3 months.
The Equatoguinean government has signed a contract with VFS Globala company specializing in visa outsourcing and technology services for governments (which currently handles many countries, including India), to manage the issuance of its electronic visas.
To obtain an e-Visa, applicants will need to register using their email address, complete the online visa application form, and upload the required documents.
It is important to note that certain nationals are exempt from visa requirements when entering Equatorial Guinea : Barbados, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Tunisia and Turkey. Citizens of all other countries are required to obtain a visa, and can now apply for an e-visa.
Equatorial Guinea thus joins 24 other African countries that were already offering electronic visas in 2022, according to the Visa Openness Index (Visa Openness Index). Despite a low index score of 0.0190, Equatorial Guinea is taking a step towards greater openness.
