July 1, 2024 will mark an important turning point for travelers wishing to visit Israel. As of this date, citizens of many countries that were previously visa-exempt will now be required to obtain a electronic travel authorizationor ETA-IL, before entering the country. This change is designed not only to improve security at Israel's borders, but also to simplify and streamline the entry process for tourists.
What is ETA-IL?
L'ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization - Israel) is an electronic travel authorization similar to the systems in force in countries such as CanadaAustralia, the UNITED STATES or the New Zealand. This measure enables pre-selection of visit requests upstream, ensuring better management of entries to the territory.
A two-phase launch
The system will be launched in two phases:
- Pilot phase: From June 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024, during which time only US and German citizens will be able to apply for ETA-IL voluntarily and free of charge.
- Global opening : From July 1, 2024, all visitors from visa-exempt countries must obtain an ETA-IL before leaving for Israel.

Who should apply for an ETA-IL?
Citizens of many countries currently exempt from visa requirements to enter Israel will be affected by this new measure. The full list of countries can be consulted at Israel's official portal, which will also serve as the official deposit site.
The site announces issue times between 24 and 72 hoursand a 2-year document validity.
