A new regulation came into force in Mexico on October 22, 2023, requiring international travelers transiting through its airports to have a specific visa. Let's take a look at this measure and how to obtain one to facilitate your next visit to the country.
Who does the Mexican Visitor Visa apply to?
As of October 22, 2023, all foreigners transiting and connecting via Mexican airports must have the "visitors without a permit to carry out paid activities"This is the only way they can board any flight to Mexico, no matter how long the transit time in Mexico.
However, certain exceptions apply:
- People holding a document proving their permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Schengen area or a member of the Pacific Alliance do not require a Mexican visa.
- Individuals with a valid visa for Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom or a Schengen country
From this date onwards, people who fail to obtain the correct transit visa will be denied access to flights departing from Mexico. It is therefore very important for travelers to ensure that they have met this requirement when planning their passage through Mexican airports.
THE Mexico Visitor Visa is intended for international visitors planning to visit the country as tourists, to visit friends or family, to take part in business activities, to attend cultural or sporting events, or any other similar activity unrelated to employment in the country. For travelers from India, for example, the Mexico Visitor Visa costs USD 50.
How do I obtain a Visitor Visa for transit through Mexico?
To obtain this visa, it is generally necessary to provide :
- A valid passport
- THE completed visa application form
- Proof of financial means to cover the stay
- In some cases, proof of return or onward travel (onward ticket)
The application must then be submitted to the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate. The process has not yet been digitized. This decision was prompted by the extraordinary mass exodus of Cubans fleeing the island to Central American countries via Mexico.
