The Panamanian government has just published a decree that considerably extends visa exemption for certain foreign travelers. The measure, which will come into force on January 1, 2025, is designed to simplify entry into the country for holders of visas or residence permits issued by nations considered "safe".
Until now, travellers had to prove that their visa had already been used at least once to enter the issuing country and was valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into Panama. These restrictive conditions have now been removed. All you need is a valid visa or residence permit. issued by one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, United Kingdom, United States or a member state of the European Union.
The authorities hope to attract more visitors, particularly from Asia and Europe. Panama is a destination of choice for lovers of nature, history and Latin American culture.
A "friendly countries" visa that's being emulated
At the same time as this extended exemption, Panama is maintaining its program of "visa friendly countries". Launched a few years ago, this scheme makes it easy for nationals of 50 nations to settle in the country to work or invest.
Beware of new rules for tourists
While Panama is easing entry conditions for certain travelers, it is paradoxically toughening the tone for ordinary tourists. Since September 2023, new measures have been in force:
- Length of stay can be reduced from 90 to 15 days depending on nationality
- Minimum amount required to prove creditworthiness increased from $500 to $1,000
- Expulsions and deportations are stepped up
Europe falls into line
In a reciprocal move, the European Union has confirmed that Panamanians do not need a visa for short stays (less than 90 days) in the Schengen area.. A godsend for travellers wishing to discover the Old Continent!
Note that from 2025, Panamanians will need to obtain an authorization ETIAS before they travel. This formality, which will cost 7 euros, will be mandatory to enter the Schengen area.
