Cambodia's development continues with the inauguration of the new Siem Reap-Angkor international airport, a project that will increase tourist capacity and boost the region's economic potential.
A brand-new airport to welcome even more visitors
The new Siem Reap-Angkor airport replaces the decades-old airport (Siem Reap International Airport). Designed to be an improved gateway to the country's biggest tourist attraction, the Angkor Wat temple complex in the north-western province of Siem Reap, marks a milestone in the development of tourism in Cambodia.
- Commercial operations began in mid-October with a flight of Bangkok Airways from Thailand, the first plane to land at the new airport.
- A further 16 flights were scheduled on this first day of operation.
- The old airport could handle up to 2 million passengers a year: now, the new facility will be able to handle 7 million each year.
- Ultimately, the aim is to increase capacity to 12 million passengers a year by 2040.
The importance of tourism for Cambodia
According to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, the country received nearly 3.5 million international tourists in the first eight months of 2023. The importance of the tourism sector and related infrastructure to Cambodia's economic development is obvious. The construction of new airports is therefore one of the government's major strategic orientations.
Official inauguration scheduled for November with Prime Minister Hun Manet
At a ceremony marking the start of operations, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth announced that the new Siem Reap-Angkor international airport would be officially inaugurated on November 16 by Prime Minister Hun Manet and several senior Chinese officials.
In addition to this project, which is already up and running, the Phnom Penh's new international airport, Techno International Airport, is currently under construction on a 2,600-hectare site. Completion is scheduled for 2024. The new airport will also help to increase tourist capacity and support Cambodia's economic development.
International cooperation for these projects
The construction and implementation of the new airports reflect the commitment and mutual cooperation between the Cambodian authorities, foreign investors and local companies who want to contribute to the sustainable development of the Cambodian economy. This fruitful collaboration has resulted in an ambitious, large-scale project that will benefit not only visitors, but also Cambodians themselves, with the prospect of continued growth in the years to come.
The success of electronic visas in Cambodia
The Cambodia Visa can be obtained online and is required to enter the country. Health restrictions linked to COVID-19 have been lifted since October 3, 2022, and it is no longer necessary to prove vaccination status or undergo a test on arrival.
It is important that the passport be valid for at least 6 months upon entry into Cambodia1. The cost of a tourist e-Visa is around 68 euros, valid for 3 months and allowing a 30-day stay, processed within 5 working days.
