The Brazilian authorities have announced a NEW DEFERRAL of the visa requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia. Originally scheduled for January 10, 2024, this measure has now been postponed until April 10, 2024.
This change comes after 3 years of unilateral visa exemption granted by the Brazilian government. As a reminder, the reintroduction of the visa requirement had been decided in March 2023 and was initially scheduled to come into force on October 1, 2023..
Reason for postponement: to avoid problems during peak tourist season
The Brazilian government justifies this postponement by explaining that it wishes to avoid the introduction of these visa requirements creating problems during peak tourist seasonwhich takes place between the end of the year and the beginning of the following year.
The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism also indicates that this postponement will allow the finalization of the electronic visa system. This decision was taken following the signing of a decree by President Luiz Inรกcio Lula da Silva amending decree no. 11.692 published in September 2023..

Back to an electronic visa system
Prior to 2019 and the unilateral visa waiver decreed by the previous Brazilian president, travelers and businessmen from the USA, Canada and Australia had to apply for a visa in advance. The imminent reintroduction of visa requirements for these three countries also marks the return of the e-Visa for Brazil, which has been available since 1er December 2023.
Nationals of these countries will need to apply for an electronic visa to enter Brazil as tourists, business travelers or transit passengers.
How do I obtain an e-Visa for Brazil?
The application process for e-Visa for Brazil is relatively straightforward and can be accessed online. After filling in an online form and uploading the necessary documents, applicants must pay a fee of 80 USD (78 €)to process their application. This electronic visa then allows travellers to stay in Brazil for a maximum of 90 days.
Reciprocity policy maintained
The reintroduction of the visa requirement is part of an ongoing reciprocity policy aimed at encouraging equal treatment between the countries concerned. In September 2032, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, explained that this change had been decided because other countries did not grant the same visa-free advantage to Brazilian citizens, according to their respective legislation. So, if a country accepts Brazilian travellers without a physical visa, Brazil will also grant the same benefit in return.
With this new announcement of the postponement of the visa requirement, American, Canadian and Australian tourists entering Brazil before the April 9, 2024 will continue to be exempt from visa requirements. However, travelers will have to comply with the new regulations from April 10.
