From January 1, 2024, international visitors will be able to travel to Kenya without a visa, but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. Here's everything you need to know about this new measure and the steps to take, as confirmed by the Kenyan authorities.
What is ETA Kenya?
ETA Kenya is a semi-automated system for determining the eligibility of visitors to the country.
ETA applications can be submitted from December 27.Travelers are advised to apply as soon as they have booked their accommodation and transport tickets. The eVitizen visa application platform should be shut down at this time.However, e-Visas already issued will remain valid until 2024.
Who should apply for an ETA Kenya?
ETA is compulsory for all foreign visitorswith the exception of citizens of member countries of the East African Community (EAC, comprising Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, DR Congo and Somalia).
How will the ETA Kenya application process work?
The ETA application for Kenya can be submitted to via the government portal or via a future mobile application calledKenya Travel Authorization". The next steps are as follows:
- Click on "Apply Now” ;
- Select your nationality ;
- Download a scanned copy of your passport ;
- Upload a scanned copy of your passport photo or take a selfie ;
- Fill in the ETA form;
- Provide proof of accommodation during your stay;
- Download proof of your means of transport;
- Select the desired processing time: Standard (72 hours) or Premium ;
- Submit your request.
After submitting your application, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt and an email confirming payment. Once the immigration officer has made a decision, an email confirming approval or rejection will be sent to you. Print the attachment in PDF format or download it to your cell phone or in the application Kenya Travel Authorization if your application is approved.
What documents are required for ETA Kenya?
When you apply for an ETA, you will need to provide the following documents:
- A copy of your passport;
- A passport photo or a selfie;
- A valid plane ticket;
- Proof of accommodation during your stay in Kenya.
How much will ETA Kenya cost?
The price of ETA Kenya will vary according to the process requested. Kenya offers "classic" or "premium" (sic) processing, much like private visa agencies:
- Standard treatment to USD 30$ (31 €)
- Premium treatment to 50$ USD (52 €)
Transaction fees may also apply (approx. 3%). Please note: ETA authorization process required even for minorsincluding those under 16 who previously benefited from visa exemption.
In case of transit in Kenya for less than 72 hours with entry on Kenyan territory as soon as it leaves the international zone, an ETA must be obtained.
What are the advantages of choosing "premium processing" for ETA Kenya?
With a premium treatment, you can get faster processing of your request (compared with 72 hours for standard requests), talk to an agent by email or chat and modify or complete your request if necessary, particularly in the event of a change in travel dates.
