Canada continues to step up its efforts to address chronic shortages in the Canadian workforce. On this basis, the Express Entry Canada draw will resume in July, and expatriation to Canada will be simpler. Express Entry is the online system used by the Canadian government to manage immigration applications. Specifically for skilled workers.
Simplified admission criteria
The Minister of l'Immigration, des Rรฉfugiรฉs et de la CitoyennetรฉSean Fraser, announced improvements to the immigration system. He stated that admission criteria for Canadian experience classes will be relaxed. This is intended to facilitate the expatriation of federally qualified workers.
Minister Sean Fraser also pointed out that the federal backlog of highly skilled workers has been reduced. For example, it fell from 112,000 in September 2021 to 48,000 in March 2022. Similarly, forecasts indicate that the backlog is set to fall further from July onwards. This means that Canada can resume inviting skilled worker candidates already at home and abroad.
In addition, since autumn 2021, ITAs are only issued to applicants to the Provincial Nominee Program. In the vast majority of cases, new applications received from July onwards will be processed within six months.
A new immigration policy
A new temporary policy will enable international graduates to stay longer in Canada. The aim is to give them a better chance of obtaining permanent residency. Starting this summer, applicants with a post-graduation work permit expiring in 2022 can apply for a new open work permit. This will be valid for up to 18 months.
Canada also doubled the number of decisions made on applications for permanent residence in the first quarter of 2022. This was done to over 156,000 applications and welcomed 113,000 new permanent residents during the period. Over 100,000 work permit applications were also processed in the first three months of the year.
In addition, a temporary public policy will be introduced for the first time in August 2022. This policy may allow foreigners living in Canada to apply for employer-specific work permits. This decision will be effective until February 2023. In addition, new measures have been announced for candidates applying for the single pathway from RT to RP. This will apply even if applications have closed in November 2021.
New measures for the transition from temporary to permanent residence
Applicants will no longer be required to be present in Canada while their application is being processed. Those applying for an open work permit while waiting for their application for permanent residence to be finalized will be able to obtain a work permit. This will be valid until the end of 2024.
Family members of the principal applicant for permanent residence will be eligible for their own open work permit. This initiative has been taken to support family reunification.
