Saudi Arabia, known as a crossroads of the Muslim faith with the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, has recently revised its visa procedures to improve the experience of pilgrims. These changes, which have a direct impact on the planning and execution of the Umrah (small pilgrimage), are timely as the country actively prepares for the 2024 Hajj.
This adjustment to the rules is aimed at better synchronizing the flow of pilgrims before the big Hajj gathering, thus avoiding overlaps that could affect the organization and spirituality of religious journeys.
New time frame for Umra visas
According to recent announcements by the Ministry of Hajj and Umra, the 3-month validity of Umra visas now begins as soon as they are issued, rather than upon entry into Saudi territory. This key measure will enable pilgrims to better organize their arrival and stay in Saudi Arabia.
โ ๏ธ Attentione-Visas for "Umrah/Omra/pilgrimage" reasons are marked as "Tourism", which is normal. Consequently, they are not affected by the above validity measure.
Visas must be used for entry before 15 Dhul Qadah (May 23, 2024 in the Gregorian calendar), bringing forward slightly the period during which pilgrims can visit sacred sites compared with previous years when the deadline extended to Dhul Qadah 29 (June 6).

Optimum synchronization with the Hajj
The Hajj, one of the 5 pillars of Islam, requires meticulous organization by both the authorities and the faithful. By limiting the period of validity of Umra visas to just before the start of the Hajj, the Saudi authorities aim to smooth the transition between the two pilgrimages. International visitors should therefore pay particular attention to the dates on which their visas are issued, in order to complete their Umra without any hiccups.
During the Hajj, e-Visas do not work for Medina and Jeddah airports (for Mecca), regardless of the reason for travel. You will need a Hajj visa. The end of the Hajj week is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
